Steel portal frames with tapered beams and (or) columns are widely used. The influence of local buckling on the behaviors of tapered H-section members should be investigated in some details, which is one of dominant factors that control the stability and safety design of the members. A geometric and material nonlinear finite element program is used to investigate the locally buckled tapered H-section members under non-uniform pressure, where the effects of local imperfections of web, yielding and large deflections are taken in to account. According to the load-deflections curves of a lot of examples, the effects of average web width to thickness ratio, web tapering ratio, slenderness parameter and web width on local buckling behaviors of tapered H-section members under non-uniform pressure are discussed; Some valuable conclusions are given.
