It is well known that polymer liquid crystals (PLCs) have typically mesogenic (such as the phenyl group) and flexible units (such as the methylene group) in one chain. The two kinds of units can be put together in a variety of ways, resulting in several classes of structures, each class with distinct properties. Among this variety of PLCs, popular because of potential applications are fully aromatic polyesters. However, the popularity is not entirely deserved; processing is quite difficult because of high melting temperature. Clearly, we need to look for ways to lower the melting temperature. One of these is the development of PLCs by using siloxane group as a flexible unit. Moreover, PLCs involving silicone are related to the development of PLC elastomers.
