摘要

Precision flatstones are an essential tool for use with precision surfaces. When a flatstone is rubbed on such a surface, small asperities and high spots are caught in the porous cavities of the flatstone and are sheared off. The rest of the surface remains largely unchanged. For that reason, flatstones are essential for repairing or preparing precision ground surfaces. They remove localized swelling that occurs from surface damage such as nicks and dents. These small swellings from seemingly insignificant accidents can severely inhibit precision assemblies of these parts. The process of removing the surface damage with flatstones is also self-limiting; as the high spots wear down, material removal decreases until there is full contact of the stone to the surface. This process is demonstrated and results are shown for various common examples of surface damage imaged by the a laser scanning microscope.
