Oakland County Michigan is the home of many Fortune 500 companies. Serving the educational needs of its' 200,000+ school-age children are 28 independently operated school districts. Serving these school districts and in turn the educational needs of children, enrolled in school districts and charter schools is the intermediate school district, (ISD) Oakland Schools. Oakland Schools as an organization formally dates back to 1941. In tradition the function of the county school district comes from a much earlier time in history when county structures were the most economical approach for the provision of a host of community service. This economy of scale still pervades selection of what is or is not done by an ISD. One of our primary functions has been to administer over the provision of what we now call Career Focused Education; most others would call it Vocational Education. This presentation will help cross the bridge in these terms and hopefully expand our collective thinking about what is now possible. What can happen when people of kindred spirit regarding quality commit to creating a community of learners for a connected community?
