Ground movements of an ancient landslide accelerated following the construction of a pumped storage power project about thirty years ago. Though at a relatively low movement rate, the active landslide posed hazards not only to the serviceability of transmission structures and roads located within the landslide zone but also to the power plant, reservoir dam and other facilities downstream from the landslide. Long-term monitoring and thorough engineering investigations led to the unequivocal depiction of the scope of the problems and eventual remediation of the landslide. On-site quarrying of rock material in the vicinity of a power plant, two dams and other facilities presented critical challenges to the remediation project. The now almost-completed construction project has not caused interruptions to the normal operation of the power plant. This paper presents historical landslide monitoring data as well as the methodology of the landslide remediation project. Different facets encountered during the investigation, design and construction of the landslide remediation will also be discussed.
