Suzhou: A Preliminary Case Study of Ground-Level Ozone Pollution in a Middle Size Chinese City

Within the Sino-Italian environmental protection cooperation framework, an entire air quality monitoring network has been developed in the medium sized Chinese city if Suzhou. The system was developed to comply with the European standards (Directive 96/62/EC) established by the Italian Institute for Atmospheric Pollution. We have continuously monitored ozone levels at three different types of sites in 2005, have been studied. The results of the investigation show evidence of a regional transport pollution phenomenon: O_3 concentrations are relatively high at the regional background site with observed peaks in spring over 120 ppb but lower at the residential and traffic sites about 70 ppb. The results also reflect common daily variations and long term temporal trends at all three sites. By analyzing relative nitrogen oxides (NO_2 and NO) and O_3 concentrations and interpreting the vertical wind profiles, atmospheric stability index, it has been possible to isolate a particular photochemical pollution phenomenon from ozone peak episodes contributed from the free-troposphere reservoir or formatted by local reactions. This paper is among the first attempts to present a systematic and scientific analysis of ozone pollution phenomenon in China. The Suzhou case, furthermore, is presented as a potentially useful pilot study for building a more broadly based foundation for a study of ozone pollution in the Yangtze River delta area.
