The 1,200-ha Woods Creek watershed in the Upper Fox River basin lies 72 km northwest of Chicago in Algonquin, Illinois. Algonquin is changing from a rural agricultural community to a residential and commercial center. The 1990 population was 11,663, the population reached 21,400 by 1998, and it is forecasted to reach 38,211 by 2020. Agriculture dominated the Woods Creek watershed. Wetlands were drained and the floodplain farmed. During the 1990s, much land in the lower watershed was converted to residential uses. Still, three rare hill-slope fens survive in the watershed. Water quality deteriorated and turbidity, nutrient enrichment, and low dissolved oxygen were reported from the creek and downstream Lake in the Hills. Woods Creek mirrors the problems in the Upper Fox Basin where wetland loss and attainment of designated uses are problems. Agricultural runoff and population growth threaten improvement in the Upper Fox Basin. Algonquin wants a coherent watershed plan with goals and management practices that allows development but conserves the creek, floodplain, fens, wetlands and recharge areas. Woods Creek benefits the citizenry by providing recreation, education, open space, wildlife habitat, and a visual resource. The final plan will encourage public/private partnerships to restore the creek, floodplain and wetland communities, and preserve upland habitats and recharge areas.
