摘要

High flow events affect substrates and large woody debris, influencing channel stability in low-order streams. To quantify these associations, we used a Total Station and radial topography surveying methods commonly used for design and construction to produce a high-resolution map of a 180-m reach of Atherton Brook on the Quabbin Reservation, in central Massachusetts, USA. The stream bed and bank topography and substrate type and size were mapped on a 0.5-m grid. Integer codes were used to differentiate substrate classes and other physical characteristics during mapping and for subsequent geographic information system (GIS) analyses. After completing our initial survey in mid-August 1999, a stormflow event substantially altered the stream reach―breaching debris dams, redistributing large woody debris (LWD), and producing extensive areas of scour and deposition. A 60-m reach was resurveyed to quantify changes in channel topography. Peak discharge during the stormflow event was estimated to be 7.5 m~3/s with a recurrence interval of 2-10 years. This information will help to quantify the interrelationship between stormflow events, channel stability, LWD movement, and brook trout habitat characteristics.
