摘要

Competition between ecological and economic values in riparian forests creates a management dilemma that is not easily resolved. For the Interior Columbia River Basin, we propose a solution that tailors management practices to fit local conditions described by riparian, stream channel, and fish habitat requirements. Riparian stand conditions on Plum Creek Timber Company lands in Montana, Idaho, and eastern Washington were described using 640 randomly distributed sample plots. Nine dominant riparian stand types were identified. A forest growth model and a large woody debris-loading model were used to simulate outcomes of different riparian management options in these stand types. Five of nine stand types have limited ability to provide LWD and consequently are most sensitive to timber harvest. The remaining four can withstand timber harvest and still provide LWD. Adjusting the number and location of leave trees within 15 m of streams can greatly affect future LWD loads with little additional costs to landowners. Montana's existing riparian management guidelines appear adequate to protect the LWD recruitment function in most cases. Where fish habitat is most vulnerable to LWD loss, and where fish species or life-stages are most vulnerable to such losses, increased riparian protection can provide the greatest conservation benefit. These situations include stream reaches with gradients between 1.5% and 3%, and areas prone to channel avulsion.
