Abstract: In this paper, various issues concerning the production of 3-D presentations from multislice biomedical images are considered. Data storage schemes are briefly discussed with respect to compression and access efficiency. The authors then describe the principles of surface rendering and illustrate with a combined wireframe and a surface shaded presentation of an example data set. Volume projection is considered in some detail, giving a number of different but simple means of producing projection images, including binary, transparent and brightest point techniques. It is concluded that both surface and volume rendering offer advantages for visualization and that future work based on combined techniques will be most useful, with an efficient means of extracting surface orientation from volumetric data being an immediate goal.!
