The free vibration characteristics of thick plates resting on Pastemak foundations are studied.A continuum-based plate element, which takes account of transverse shear deformation, is developed directly from three-dimensional elasticity theory and the incompatible modes method. The elastic foundation under a plate element is treated as a separate foundation element. Convergence and comparison studies demonstrate the accuracy of the present method, and parametric investigations on the dynamic behaviours of thick plates resting on elastic foundation with respect to various foundation stiffness parameters and thickness-width ratios are also carried out.
