The latest developments in emission regulations from IMO (Annex VI 73/78) and the EPA as examples are, in various parts of the world, starting to drive owners to seriously consider engine emissions or suffer some pretty severe financial penalties. The paper would identify the various regulations in place today, confirm what changes are being proposed to tighten up the regulations tomorrow and indicate what penalties are presently applied or maybe applied to vessel owners that are ignoring the "call" for reduced emissions. As well as replacing older engines with engines built using the latest in emissions technology there is a system that can be retrofitted that cleans engine emissions, particularly NOX, by upwards of 90%. The systems are known as SCR's (Selective Catalytic Reactors). Using the MaK engines presently used by BC Ferries as examples the paper would provide details of the workings of the SCR system, the pros and cons of such a system and the expected results such a system could achieve. Again, using BC Ferries MaK engines as an example, in addition to the above the paper would also provide listeners with emission comparisons between the older MaK engines (burning gas oil) vs. the latest M series MaK engines (using gas oil, marine diesel oil or heavy fuel oil).
