We present Cluster and Double Star-1 (TC-1)rnobservations from a close magnetic conjunction onrnMay 8, 2004. The five spacecraft were on the dawnsidernflank of the magnetosphere, with TC-1 located near thernequatorial plane and Cluster at higher geographicrnlatitudes in the southern hemisphere. TC-1, at itsrnapogee, skimmed the magnetopause for almost 8 hoursrn(between 08:00-16:00 UT). Flux Transfer Eventsrn(FTEs), moving southward/tailward from thernreconnection site, were observed by TC-1 throughoutrnalmost all of the period. Cluster, travelling on a mainlyrndawn-dusk trajectory, crossed the magnetopause atrnaround 10:30 UT in the same Magnetic Local Timern(MLT) sector as TC-1 and remained close to thernmagnetopause boundary layer in the southernrnhemisphere. The four Cluster spacecraft observedrnFTEs for a period of 6.5 hours between 07:30 andrn14:00 UT.rnFrom the properties of these FTEs, the reconnectionrnsite was located northward of both TC-1 and Cluster onrnthe dawn flank of the magnetosphere. Reconnectionrnoccurred between draped magnetosheath and closedrnmagnetospheric field lines. Despite variablerninterplanetary magnetic field (IMF) conditions andrnIMF-Bz turnings, the IMF clock-angle remained greaterrnthan 70° and the location site appeared to remainrnrelatively stable in position during the whole period.rnThis result is in agreement with previous studies whichrnreported that the dayside reconnection remained activernfor an IMF clock-angle greater than 70°. Thernsimultaneous observation of FTEs at both Cluster andrnTC-1, separated by 2 hours in MLT, implies that thernreconnection site on the magnetopause must have beenrnextended over several hours in MLT.
