We modeled a neural network for a pair association task and examined whether mutual interactions between the prefrontal cortex (PC) and the inferotemporal cortex (IT) have any roles in memory retrieval from the IT. With cortical pathways selectively cut or kept intact, we carried out pair (cue-associate visual features) association tasks. We show that the top-down pathway from the PC to IT contributes to the retrieval of the memory of the associate feature and the bottom up pathway (IT-to-PC) contributes to the maintenance of the retrieved memory. The key process for that interaction is the dynamic linkage of point attractors, which encode information about a cue and its associate represented in the IT, and about their relationship (category) represented in the PC.
