Advances in communications and control systems have made if possible to undertake the development of military Uninhabited Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) with sophisticated capabilities. Such vehicles offer potential to effectively carry out certain types of missions with little risk to human life, cost effectiveness, and superiority to manned aircraft. We describe research into autonomous agent architectures for continuous control of a fleet of UAVs using collective mission goals rather than goals for individual aircraft. The intent is for the fleet to autonomously coordinate itself in an operational environment that is not completely understood at the time of deployment, but rather emerges as the mission unfolds.
