Wind speeds and ice thicknesses for a 50-year return period are presented in ASCE Manual 74 for the structural design of transmission lines. In this paper we discuss the occurrence of extremes for 50-year and longer return periods and methods for the estimation of extreme values from a limited number of years of wind or ice data. Plotting positions for the sample of extremes, graphical fits, extreme value distributions, and the methods of moments and probability weighted moments for analytical fits to the data to determine wind speeds and ice thicknesses for 50-year return periods are discussed. Extreme ice thicknesses for the St. Lawrence Valley are compared to design ice loads specified in the early 1970s for the 735kV system. The effect of wind on the accreted ice thickness is also discussed.
