Sustainable watershed management in Sri Lanka includes increasing of productivity of lands while ensuring environmental and social benefits to the present and future generations. To cope up with this situation, it is imperative to identify challenges and opportunities in management of riparian forest. A well thought vision is required in the forestry sector to meet these needs. Policy development and making necessary changes in the existing forest and watershed management policies is primarily important to make opportunities in the sustainable watershed management. Without promoting riparian forest management strategies, depletion of water sources will be a major problem in the future. Hence, projects for protection of upper watersheds are needed to re-afforest and conserve the existing riparian forests.
