The paper describes results from a major research project on the environment around offshore helidecks, and the way in which helicopters respond to the aerodynamic disturbances. The work, which started in 1997, is funded by the UK Civil Aviation Authority and the UK Health & Safety Executive, and is expected to be completed early in 2002. The results of the research have, and will be used to enhance existing CAA guidance material on standards for offshore helidecks, and will be incorporated in the new Industry 'owned' helideck design guide currently being developed. This wide-ranging project has; (ⅰ) examined the nature and extent of the environmental problems that have been experienced by helicopters operating to offshore helidecks, (ⅱ) reviewed offshore helicopter operations in the context of the environmental hazards as well as the environmental hazards themselves, (ⅲ) established the implications of these hazards for helicopter performance and handling, and (ⅳ) reviewed the content of existing guidance material and the current regulatory regime. However, in deference to the current audience this paper concentrates on the response of the helicopter and pilot to the aerodynamic effects. The project has been led by BMT Fluid Mechanics Limited, with key technical contributions from DERA Bedford and Glasgow Caledonian University.
