In the human-centered product life cycle, a support system that customizes designs according to customer's KANSEI is indispensable. The successful realization of such a design system is now one of the most important research themes in the field of product design, but a technology that can translate a customer's KANSEI into physical parameters is required. Although many methods for handling 2D information such as color or pattern have been proposed in KANSEI research, explorations of methods for dealing with 3D shapes are relatively scarce. While it is obvious that color and other surface properties are indispensable KANSEI factors, the 3D shape of the object being designed is a fundamental KANSEI factor as well. Therefore, a clarification of the relationships between 3D shapes and KANSEI expressions, and the development of a design support system capable of incorporating a designer's KANSEI input during the design stage, would be extremely useful. This paper proposes a method of 3D shape design that utilizes KANSEI input. The method is based on free-form deformations and data analysis algorithms. To test the method's efficacy, a prototype tool was created for deforming 3D product shapes according to KANSEI inputs. And it was found that the tool offered considerable advantages during the design of the 3D shapes under consideration.
