摘要

Any shift foreman or maintenance supervisor has learned the importance of understanding and disseminating critical information embedded in complex and lengthy documents quickly and effectively. This type of skill is often built on experience, not training. A 2006 study on reading habits showed 38% of high school graduates deficient in reading comprehension and 70% deficient in critical thinking skills.1 These skill gaps may increase in the next 5-10 years as the Internet age is changing the way people read and think.2 This paper introduces a tool that leadership development programs can use to improve "metacognitive monitoring" skills - the ability to detect a lack of understanding so that it can be corrected3) - in current and future nuclear leaders. Good readers demonstrate metacognitive monitoring through demonstrating strong awareness of why they are reading a text, developing an overview of the text before reading, reading selectively based on the overview, developing strategies for tracking important points and applying their new found knowledge.4 Developing these and other critical thinking skills associated with reading is vital to many if not all aspects of a supervisor's role as leader.
