Condition monitoring research at Cardiff University evolved from sensor-based methods to a Petri-Net-based method that primarily uses embedded machine signals. Most recently distributed monitoring systems have been developed that are applicable to sequentially controlled machines and processes. Microcontroller systems with CAN bus inter-chip communications and internet connectivity have been used and provide remote display of monitored and processed information and connection to a server-based database. The authors feel that it is timely to consider the integration of traditional and smart sensors into such a distributed system. This paper will present some of the considerations and possible applications.
