The current upsurge in popularity in the wood flooring market in the UK has sparked considerable interest from manufacturers of floor seals and lacquers wanting to capitalise on this trend. The number of floor seal products available has proliferated over recent years to accommodate this trend. Furthermore new product developments with no consumer pedigree have been stimulated through the introduction of directives limiting VOC's. Against the backdrop of increased product diversity and burgeoning market interest, there is a current lack of test standardisation in the arena of floor seals which allows manufacturers to test products to arbitrary in-house methods. The consumer is left with making specification and selection decisions based mainly on the claims of manufacturers derived from methodologies which may not be comparable. This paper describes a recently completed programme of research which seeks to provide consumers with impartial guidance based on a combination of laboratory test methods and field trials. The culmination of the programme was the development of a new approach to product specification which provides users with the ability to make strategic selection choices based on property requirements rather than manufacturer prejudices and allows the trafficking environment ultimately to dictate the choice of seal products.
