With the cost competitive nature of material mining, the ability to actively montiro the condition of the conveyor belt systems without personnel dedicated to that task is very desirable. This paper discusses the development of a conveyor belt condition monitoring systems, which actively monitors the conveyor belt, without the need to install special antennas. A belt width map can be generated, as well as detection of three types of physical damages: (a) failure of mechanical fasten-ers, (b) reduction in belting strength due to reductions in competent belt width, and (c) longitudinal belt rips.
