Magnesium and its alloys are in discussion worldwide. Due to its low density the metal is very interesting for designers of several branches. Especially this development is to be seen in automotive application. It was estimated, that the share of Magnesium in a car could reach up to 80 kilograms or even more. That's why a strong increase in the Magnesium demand is expected. Another reason for the strong demand is given by the development in the electronic industry and for the production of hand tools. Currently new plants for the magnesium production arise worldwide. But it should not be hidden, that the metal has to fight with reservations that are deduced from his position in the II. main group in the periodic table. Magnesium often has higher prices than its competitors, like aluminum or steel. In many cases designers prefer aluminum due to its good processing properties and its good price. This paper will compare the development of both metals after its first discovery. It will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of both metals and will show, where magnesium will have chances within the next few years.
