We present preliminary results from the Sea Ice Physicsrnand Ecosystems eXperiment, SIPEX-2, that will be usedrnfor the calibration of Cryosat-2 sea ice products in EastrnAntarctica. We encountered difficult sea ice conditionsrnwith sea ice thickness exceeding 5 m over large areas,rndue to highly deformed sea ice floes consisting of manyrnunconsolidated blocks. In addition, snow load on top thernsea ice ranged between 0.5 m and 1m in general, withrnnegative sea ice freeboard common in the study area. Therndata collected during the expedition are currently beingrnanalysed and will be made available for calibration ofrnspace-borne data as soon as possible.
