We present preliminary results from the Sea Ice Physics and Ecosystems eXperiment, SIPEX-2, that will be used for the calibration of Cryosat-2 sea ice products in East Antarctica. We encountered difficult sea ice conditions with sea ice thickness exceeding 5 m over large areas, due to highly deformed sea ice floes consisting of many unconsolidated blocks. In addition, snow load on top the sea ice ranged between 0.5 m and 1m in general, with negative sea ice freeboard common in the study area. The data collected during the expedition are currently being analysed and will be made available for calibration of space-borne data as soon as possible.
