Unlike most altimetric missions, CryoSat-2 (CS-2),rnoriginally conceived for cryosphere studies, is notrnequipped with an onboard microwave radiometerrn(MWR) to provide the wet tropospheric correctionrn(WTC) to the radar altimeter measurements, thus theirrncorrection currently relies on a model-based onernprovided by the European Centre for Medium-rangernWeather Forecasts (ECMWF). In the ambit of ESArnfunded project CP4O, an improved WTC for CS-2 datarnover ocean is under development, based on a datarncombination algorithm (DComb) through objectivernanalysis of WTC values derived from all existing datarntypes.rnThe scope of this study is the analysis of the variousrnavailable datasets for the computation of the wet pathrndelay of altimeter measurements over ocean, and therninter-calibration of the derived WTC. Emphasis is givenrnto the analysis of the WTC derived from water vapourrnproducts of different scanning MWR aboard variousrnremote sensing (RS) missions. Together with wet pathrndelays derived at Global Navigation Satellite Systemrn(GNSS) coastal and island stations and data from thernECMWF ReAnalysis (ERA) Interim model, these willrnconstitute the main data sets for use in the DCombrnalgorithm.rnA brief summary of the main issues regarding therncomputation of the WTC from all used data products isrnpresented.rnFor open ocean altimetry, an inter-calibration ofrnscanning MWR derived WTC is performed, using thernAdvanced Microwave Radiometer (AMR) on boardrnJason-2 as reference. Moreover, the analysis of thernorbital parameters of CS-2 and all other considered RSrnmissions, as well as the respective scanning MWRrncharacteristics, provides an insight into the expectedrnimpact of these data sets on the final derived WTC.rnThe best approach for calculating the WTC from totalrncolumn water vapour (TCWV) is investigated. Thernselected approach is shown to be well suited forrnaccurate Level-2 scientific products.
