9.2 Alleviation of the Effect of Antibiotics on the Aerobic Biodegradation of Feces in Composting Toilet

We have reported the severe effect of amoxicillin dosage (penicillin group antibiotics) on the feces composting process, and the degradation mechanisms of amoxicillin (the degradation of amoxicillin in a toilet matrix was dependent on the concentration of ammonia, phosphate and hydroxyl ion.) in the composting toilet matrix. Since, in general, to show an inhibitory effect of antibiotics on bacteria, concentration of antibiotics must be more than the concentration that shows the inhibitory effect and its level must be kept for the time needed. This suggested that it is better to keep high phosphate, ammonia, and pH level for rapid degradation of amoxicillin. During the biodegradation of feces, concentration of ammonia and pH level in the sawdust matrix increases due to the decay of organic nitrogen in feces, and thus our objective in this study is to evaluate the alleviation effect of higher feces loading operation. The results indicated that we observed higher enough respiratory activity in higher feces loading operation system than that of ordinary feces loading operation. Therefore we can conclude higher feces loading operation can relieve the inhibitory effect of amoxicillin on the composting process of feces. But the reason why we can observe the relieved bacterial activity seemed not to be the rapid degradation of amoxicillin but to be other reasons like an increase in bacterial counts or its high activity.
