Decommissioning small reactors within the confines of an active University environment presents unique challenges. These range from the radiological protection of the nearby University population and grounds, to the logistical challenges of working in limited space without benefit of the established controlled, protected, and vital areas common to commercial facilities. These challenges, and others, are discussed in a brief project history of the University of Arizona research reactors. The results of the decommissioning effort at the University are presented, along with the challenges that were either anticipated or discovered during the decommissioning efforts, and results and lessons learned from the projects.
