French nuclear power plant PHENIX's Lifting Unit of the Cell 50kN (LU50) of irradiated fuel elements broke down in 2009 after 40 years of service. Nearly all means of remote operations in this cell were lost. This LU50 failure leads to block the evacuation of fuels elements. A replacement program was implemented and executed. This program consisted of the following : 1. Development and mockup tests of dismantling means, 2. Dismantling of the existing lift unit in remote operations, 3. Layout works in the cell walls for LU50, 4. Introduction of the new LU50, 5. Resealing and commissioning of the cell. The Commissariat a l'Energie Atomique (CEA) is the operator of PHENIX. This operation was conducted by the CEA (PHENIX and decommissioning Department), the project management being carried out by AREVA R & S.
