The palo radice, invented by Fernando Lizzi in 1952, is now known the world over, and has achieved global acceptance and success. Owing to the vision of one man, the field of underpinning has been changed forever. The climate in the United States has placed a high demand on the development of urban areas. The constraints presented at urban sites often require innovative solutions, rather than traditional construction methods. The micropile, although more expensive than some other traditional foundation methods has proven a viable option for underpinning existing structures and new foundation construction. This is due in large part to the advancements of specialty contractors and fabricators, as they endeavor to continually explore new techniques, materials and testing procedures. The industry has pushed the limits of the technology. Industry advancements have also led to, the evolution of the micropile into to a highly loaded individual element with little or no redundancy in many cases. As well, many new contractors are entering the micropile installation market with little or no experience. This seems in stark contrast to the original objective of Dr. Lizzi's palo radice, in which numerous lightly loaded piles act as a system. Specialty contractors, engineers, and material fabricators of the micropile industry need to be cognizant of these progressions, and take great stock and pride in the accomplishments and advancements of the palo radice to the modern day micropile. However, it is vital that industry professionals bear in mind the original applications and intent of the micropile will always be best served with the philosophy of Dr. Lizzi and the palo radice.
