Maintenance by the manujacturer was standard practice when the very first steam locomotives took to the rails at the start of the railway age in Britain, but the practice was soon displaced as the railway companies developed their own comprehensive capability. Class 365, Networker Express, is the first major UK passenger rail project since then in which the manufacturer will take a long term stake in train maintenance. This paper deals with the complexities of planning the operation from the business concept through to initial train testing, from the manufacturer's point of view.
