This paper describes the development of piggyback in the UK, the equipment, the infrastructure enhancement required, and the potential market for new types of services. It demonstrates the links between the UK and continental systems and reports on the start of services in the UK using low height trailers. It describes the state of negotiations with Railtrack over the proposed gauge enhancement to carry 4 metre high trailers, and suggests that £100 million could be saved from Railtrack's current budget of £250 m by choosing an alternative diversionary route to avoid upgrading the West Coast Main Line fast tracks.
