In situ data were collected over landfast first-year searnice (FYI) in Resolute Passage (Canada) between Mayrnand July in 2011 and 2012 as part of the Arctic-ICErnfield program to examine possible linkages betweenrnthermodynamic processes operating on and within thernice, and SAR signatures. We present methods,rnobservations and preliminary results from this fieldrncampaign. Changes in FYI surface morphology andrnmeltwater balance were measured with a terrestrialrnLight Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) instrument;rngeophysical and optical variables were sampled over arngeostatistical transect; and C-band polarimetricrnscattering signatures of characteristic surface types werernacquired coincident to LiDAR measurements of surfacernroughness. Our preliminary results indicate that therngeneral timing and magnitude of melt processesrnoccurring at the ice surface are controlled by the stagesrnoutlined in [1], and that these stages are closely linkedrnto basic satellite SAR backscatter ratios during the meltrnseason.
