In situ data were collected over landfast first-year sea ice (FYI) in Resolute Passage (Canada) between May and July in 2011 and 2012 as part of the Arctic-ICE field program to examine possible linkages between thermodynamic processes operating on and within the ice, and SAR signatures. We present methods, observations and preliminary results from this field campaign. Changes in FYI surface morphology and meltwater balance were measured with a terrestrial Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) instrument; geophysical and optical variables were sampled over a geostatistical transect; and C-band polarimetric scattering signatures of characteristic surface types were acquired coincident to LiDAR measurements of surface roughness. Our preliminary results indicate that the general timing and magnitude of melt processes occurring at the ice surface are controlled by the stages outlined in [1], and that these stages are closely linked to basic satellite SAR backscatter ratios during the melt season.
