This paper will describe the operational difficulties encountered on the auxiliary systems serving a cracked gas compressor on an ethylene plant at the BP complex at Grangemouth, Scotland. The compressor is a three casing, five-stage machine of 25 MW capacity driven by an extraction/admission/condensing steam turbine. The compressor and turbine, which were both manufactured in Europe, were first commissioned in 1993; they are shown in figure 1. The problems covered will include excessive seal oil make up, excessive sour oil leakage, seal oil/lube oil cross contamination, buffer gas control, the effects of oil contaminated with process gas and problems with the wash water system. The paper will also detail the actions taken both on line and off line to understand the root causes and then to implement the appropriate remedial work.
