The development of a new super-phosphorescent additive represents a major breakthrough in the use of phosphorescence for plastic end-use products. This additive requires 30 min of exposure to ambient light to provide 4-6 hr of high-quality illumination, a substantially longer glow time than is possible with conventional zinc sulfide phosphorescent additives. Further, the new additive, which is based on different chemistry, can be compounded at dramatically lower loading levels than zinc sulfide, facilitating both compounding and processing, and making the additive more compatible with other f illers and additives than conventional phosphorescent additionally, the technology offers new options, when combined with laser-marking technology, to achieve illumination in non-critical areas of products and components that are difficult to wire or represent a major drain on power sources. This paper will discuss the performance characteristics and applications of this novel product, and will compare it to commonly used phosphorescent additives.
