A new silicone derivative has been developed as a safer and effective flame retardant for polycarbonate (PC) resin and its derivatives. The silicone that has a branched chain structure with aromatic groups in the chain and with non-reactive terminal groups is far more effective in retarding combustion for these resins than conventional silicone derivatives. It perfectly replaces the current flame retardants auch as halogen (bromine) and phosphorus compounds, which give environmental convern when burned and disposed of and have disadvantage of reducing PC's characteristics. Furthermore, adding this silicone derivative to PC gives almost no adverse inflence on important other properties.
