摘要

Subsurface or field appraisal is an activity aimed at reducingrnreservoir uncertainty. For optimal results from appraisal, it isrnnecessary to have a clear understanding of appraisal, torndistinguish between two types of appraisal, and to use arndecision tool that ties reservoir uncertainty to potentialrneconomic consequences in the event of development. The toolrnproposed is “value of information” (VOI), which provides arnconsistent, auditable criterion for decision-making. In the casernof optimization appraisal, VOI enables an analysis of therneconomic merits of a series of development scenarios with andrnwithout appraisal information. The probability distribution ofrnthe underlying uncertainty, e.g. reserves, is a key ingredient. Arntruly cross-disciplinary effort is called for. The ultimate goalrnin appraisal is to reduce economic risk with regard to fieldrndevelopment.
