A transport tube reactor solar-thermal natural gas dissociation process is being developedrnfor potential application to fleet fueling facilities in the desert SW United States. Thernreactor consists of concentric graphite and quartz tubes heated using concentratedrnsunlight. A pilot scale process being operated at NREL has demonstrated 70% singlernpass thermal dissociation of methane at a temperature of ~2000 K. The reaction isrncarried out in approximately 10 milliseconds. For this version of the process, thernproduced carbon black can be separated using a baghouse filter and sold into the tirernbusiness. The carbon black is amorphous and nanosized. The gas product produced inrnone-step is a high hydrogen content HCNG fuel that will need diluted with NG to obtainrna 10 to 15% hydrogen containing HCNG suitable for filling CNG vehicles. Some of thernHCNG can be processed through a pressure swing absorber (PSA) to obtain purernhydrogen. A scenario for a large fleet fueling station in the Phoenix area has beenrndeveloped.
