Some 30 states now have brownfields legislation or policies to encourage the cleanup and reuse of industrial sites. Key aspects of the brownfields programs of ten industrial states are summarized as are prominent examples of brownfields success stores at metals industry sites. Despite these successes, many metals industry sites pose unique challenges to cleanup. Four important brownfields issues are discussed.
