Prospective sulphide mining operations are often faced at the permitting stage with assessing the potential of future tailings and waste rock impoundments to generate acid. Since the quantities of such material at the advanced exploration stage are often still limited to drill core it may be necessary to predict the future behaviour of what may be hundreds of millions of tonnes of material on the basis of bench scale tests completed on a few grams of material. It is, therefore, vitally important that such tests be as meaningful as possible. The measures taken to maximize the reliability and practical utility of such tests are described in this paper.
