Many air emissions are calculated using emission factors compiled by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and published in the EPA's AP-42. These emission factors were developed for sources emitting air pollutants, and, in most cases, they were determined using limited stack testing data sets. As a result, the emission factors may not be totally representative of a specific source's "true" emissions.rnThis paper will discuss the advantages of determining site-specific emission factors. The advantages will be illustrated through the experiences of a facility which developed these emission factors. These advantages include potential reducion of regulatory fees based on facility emissions and permitting requirements. In addition, recommendations will be provided to help environmental managers reduce overall testing costs associated with developing a site-specific emission factor and manage the testing.
