The concept of in situ reactive zones (in situ metal precipitation) is based on the creation ol a subsurface zone, where migrating contaminants are intercepted and permanently immobilized or degraded into harmless end products. The successful design of these reactive zones requires the ability to engineer two sets of reactions:rn1. between the injected reagents and the subsurface environment to manipulate the biogeochemistry to optimize the required reactions; and/orrn2. between the injected reagents and the migrating contaminants in order to effect remediation.rnThese interactions will be different at each contaminated site and, in fact, may vary within a given site. Thus, the major challenge is to design an engineered system for the systematic control of these reactions under the naturally variable or heterogeneous conditions found in the field.
