Remediation of ground water impacted with dissolved metals, metalloids, and radionuclides is perhaps one of the biggest challenges in environmental cleanup today. According to the USEPA, these compounds of concern are present at more than 70% (more than 11,000) of the federally owned or federally regulated cleanup sites across the United States-before considering sites in state programs or the more than 30,000 abandoned mine sites requiring environmental restoration (USEPA 2004). More evidence of the magnitude of the issue lies with the increase in stakeholder awareness, fueled by advancements in toxicology coupled with press coverage of metals-related impairment of drinking water resources.
