摘要

At the outset of this workshop, non-disabled participants will be asked to predict the most formidable barriers that they would have to overcome in their homes and neighbourhoods if they were to acquire an unexpected impairment. While the responses are being analysed, people with impaired sight, hearing, mobility and dexterity, understanding and mental health will set out the barriers that make it difficult for them to find, reach, understand, relate to and control the things they wish to use in and around their homes (the "Sheffield Formula for Inclusion"). The Formula exposes specific barriers against people with different impairments as well as common barriers that affect people with any impairment. Specific barriers include those which prevent people with impaired sight from finding things, with impaired mobility from reaching them and with impaired hearing from understanding what is being said via non-inclusive communication. Generic barriers include the lack of clear, plain language or "plain picture" guidance and instructions that impedes people with and without impairments. After these presentations, the workshop will, discuss the barriers put forward, choose a single barrier for detailed consideration, and, suggest how it could be eradicated to achieve full inclusion.
