Home improvement is a high priority for many retired people, but older consumers rarely feature in the magazine and TV programmes that specialise in the subject. Without good advice and examples we all find it difficult to envisage what could be done in terms of design to make our homes an attractive and enjoyable base for an active retirement. Traditionally home adaptation has tended to be a reactive solution to diminishing independence based on a medical model. The results are often unattractive and stigmatising to the user merely highlighting their disabilities and loss of independence. In this paper it is argued that the traditional medical model of home adaptation for older people is no longer appropriate and a fresh approach is required where everyone, but particularly older people, are self-empowered to be smart consumers and live for tomorrow by "future-proofing" their homes.
