Synchronizer Rings in manual and Dual-Clutch Transmissions (DSG) are subjected to highrnload and have to sustain wear and fatigue. The smooth interaction of components inrnsynchronizer systems is important for the function and shifting comfort of manualrntransmissions. In order to reduce shifting time, it is essential that the friction material of thernsynchronizer ring exhibit excellence friction behaviour. After presenting developments in highrnstrength P/M steels for advanced synchronizer rings this paper compares the properties andrnstructure of a sintered friction lining with a molybdenum wire-sprayed friction lining and arnwoven carbon friction lining. The frictional linings were evaluated on a synchronizer test-rigrnwith respect to their tribological performance, i.e. friction and wear properties. It was found,rnthat the molybdenum friction lining has a tendency to fretting at high pressures and therncarbon-friction lining is sensitive to high pressure. In contrast the P/M synchronizer rings withrnsinter friction lining show stable tribological behaviour over the range of pressure studied.
