CP is a widely accepted technique applied successfully since more than thirty years for theprotection of the steel reinforcement against corrosion. There are numerous studies thatprove the efficiency of the corrosion protection of the steel reinforcement by CP. Theinfluence of the electric field and the current flow respectively during CP operation on thedistribution of ions in the concrete overlay is so far not sufficiently known. Changes in thedistribution of ions during CP operation in the concrete overlay are of interest with respectto the potential efficiency of electrochemical chloride extraction and with respect to thequality of concrete that may be altered by changing the composition of the pore solution.In a field study on a pilot scale, CP was applied on steel reinforced concrete slabs (1,0 ×1,5 × 0,1 m) containing 1% and 3% chloride per weight of cement. Three different surfacemounted anode systems were evaluated: MMO-titanium mesh anode, conductive coatinganode and a galvanic anode composed of a zinc foil glued to the concrete surface. After1,5 years of CP operation, sections of concrete cores were investigated by wet chemicalanalysis and by EDX analysis in an environmental scanning electron microscope (FEGESEM).Results show that CP has a marked influence on the distribution of chloride ionsbut only a weak influence on the distribution of potassium- und sodium ions. Attractiveand repulsive forces exerted by the anode and cathode lead to a wave like distribution ofchloride ions in the concrete overlay. Convective transport of the pore solution within theconcrete overlay due to wet/dry cycles by weathering may override migration of ions dueto CP. Therefore, the influence of CP on the ionic distribution, especially of chlorides, inthe concrete overlay depends on the efficiency of anode systems in preventing the ingressof humidity into the concrete overlay, being highest below the zinc foil anode and lowestbelow the titanium mesh anode.
