Dynamic shape control of structures by piezoelectric actuation is considered in the context of vibrations produced by a translatory imposed support motion. The shape control problem under consideration is to identify a transient piezoelectric actuator distribution which, when superimposed upon the support excitation, produces a vanishing total deformation of the structure. Hence we wish to influence the motion of the structure such that it performs a purely translatory rigid-body motion in case the piezoelectric actuation acts together with the imposed support motion. An exact three-dimensional solution of this shape control problem is presented. Subsequently, the solution is applied to thin shells of revolution.
